Call for Participants

Project: Experiences of Awareness During Sleep

We are looking for participants for a study on conscious dreamless sleep. The study will consist of brain recordings during sleep followed by in-depth 1:1 interview about a particular experience*

As such, we are currently looking for individuals that have recently experienced instances of consciousness during sleep in absence of dreams. We are especially interested in finding individuals that have experienced awareness during dreamless sleep. Instances of this experience are usually described in the following way:

  • Lucid dream experiences followed by the ‘dissolution’ of the dream environment.
  • Experiences of ‘void’, ‘nothingness’, ‘emptiness’ or ‘blackness’ during sleep.
  • Experiences of ‘light’, ‘clarity’ or ‘luminosity’ during sleep.
  • Experiences of ‘pure awareness’ or ‘bare consciousness’ during sleep.

Ideal candidates would be experiencing instances of awareness during dreamless sleep regularly. We also expect ideal candidates to be currently practising different techniques to increase the apparition of such experiences.

Selected participants will take part on an experimental study at the Sleep and Memory Lab (Donders Institute, Nijmegen). Thus, we expect participants to be located nearby or with the means to travel.

The specific dates for data acquisition will be arranged with the prospective candidates and after receiving final decisions on funding. In any case, we envisage the experimental recordings to start between May to September 2020.

If you think you have experienced in several occasions instances of conscious dreamless sleep (like the ones mentioned), please, get in touch with the lead researcher a.alcaraz-sanchez.1@research.gla.ac.uk. If you think you might have been experiencing similar phenomena but does not take any of the forms previously described, or you are not sure, we still encourage you to get in touch with the lead researcher to discuss this further.

*The specific type of recording will depend on the selected participants and the experiences reported.
